Day 102 – Fading Portrait

I love the looseness of vine charcoal. I wanted to do something without any pencil work, no erasing. I approached this as if I were drawing with ink, so you can see my corrections as I worked. I like the sketched appearance you get by letting the mistakes exist with the intentional lines.

Day 101 – Feet and Sheets

Vine charcoal, tinted charcoal, and water. I wasn’t planning on using the water, so I used a thinner “charcoal” paper from Strathmore. This meant that I realized it was a bad decision after applying the water with a water brush, and the paper warped in a big way. But I wasn’t too disappointed with the results anyway.

I do love working with charcoal. It’s messy and I have to use fixative when I work with it, but sometimes the mess is part of the fun. It just means I don’t use it as often as I’d like.
